7 Ways to Turn Crisis Into Opportunity

Without wanting to diminish in any way the devastating impacts that COVID-19 is having on all of us, I am inspired by one of my corporate clients who said to me at our very first debrief: “I don’t want to waste this crisis”. A phenomenal and well-respected leader, he recognised that it offers an opportunity to do things differently, and to make changes from what was, to what is - in preparation for what will be.

If we try to define the situation the world is going through as a result of the COVID-19 in one word, it would undoubtedly be "change." Society as we knew it will not exist after the pandemic, which may cause great uncertainty.

However, every change represents a new beginning, which translates into the opportunity to start again on the same or a different path, but with more experience. It is at this point, where all aspects of our lives seem to be disrupted, that we can focus on starting a new cycle.

While this unusual situation has had a strong impact on the world economy, it is important to reflect on the opportunities that may arise to help improve economic stability.

But is it possible to move from crisis to opportunity? How can this be done? Let's look at elements that help you overcome a moment of adversity and become a leader.

1. Keep The Focus

Entrepreneurship is not easy, and even less so in these critical times. In any aspect of our lives, personal or business, the way you approach a new project is essential.

Keeping the vision on your North Star will allow you to overcome adversity and move forward on the path to project execution. The idea is the starting point; then you must set the objectives and steps to follow to reach that goal.

2. Discover The Power Of Vision

Thinking ahead is not just about visualizing, but planning. While the extent of the damage the pandemic is causing cannot be determined yet, planning for action in the face of a potentially risky situation can help direct the enterprise before, during and after the crisis.

3. Learn To Unlearn

This will allow you to identify your strategy at the right time and, more importantly, adjust appropriately to conditions so you can take advantage of the situation. Whoever learns acquires a certain knowledge. Whoever unlearns is constantly open to new processes and will appreciate the opportunity to grow and change even in times of adversity like this.

4. Take Advantage Of The Breaks

Instead of thinking that the pandemic has interrupted our lifestyle, why not see it as an opportunity for reflection? It's always good to reconsider if what we're doing is right and to how to move forward.

Creating new habits, devising new strategies and organizing priorities are some of the advantages this pause allows, and making the most of this time can bring positive results to both our personal and work lives.

5. Innovate To Grow

If there is one thing that the crisis has made clear, it is precisely that things can change in transcendental ways. Change gives way to innovation and this, in turn, gives way to growth.

During this quarantine process, we have noticed how different business sectors have sought to innovate in a way that can be maintained after it's over. Education has been one of the most notable areas; teaching methods have been adapted to the digital process, among others.

6. Practice Solidarity

The difficult moments generated by COVID-19 require that people be able to show solidarity with those in need. This, in turn, has generated the creation of new links, as a way to support each other in the face of this crisis.

This solidarity makes the situation more bearable. A "we are in this together" attitude can help those who are really struggling through this process.

7. Expand Your Comfort Zone

Crises force people out of their comfort zone to stay afloat. It leads business leaders to implement strategies to continue in the midst of the crisis.

This fact invites us to leave our comfort zones and explore new ways of doing things to achieve better results.

In China, the word crisis can be seen from two perspectives: "danger" and "opportunity". COVID-19 represents, without a doubt, a crisis. Therefore, it is up to each individual to decide how to view this situation.

How we react to this crisis will not only speak volumes about our personalities but will also allow us to evaluate the possibilities of starting a new process once the pandemic is over.
